iOS 5 Jailbreak

iOS 5 is the only version of Apple’s iOS which went straight jailbreakable in about half a dozen consecutive beta updates. Even the final iOS 5 is jailbreakable with redsn0w and sn0wbreeze. Although all of these jailbreaks have been tethered, they provided a strong hope for an untethered jailbreak that’d work on iPhone 4S and iPad 2 as well. Chronic Dev Team even announced that they had 5 userland exploits ready and gave us a hope that greepois0n would be released right after the release of iOS 5 and iPhone 4S but that has not happened, at least for now. So what’s going on in the jailbreak community and when can you expect an untethered jailbreak? For answers, read on

iOS 5 is the only iOS version that has record 5 number of exploits but this is also the version of iOS on which least number of hackers are working to bring a untethered jailbreak. Apple couldn’t beat the hackers in court so they took a U-turn and made friends with them. The new strategy is working so well that there’s only one team of hackers working to jailbreak iOS 5 untethered which – as far as I can guess – has not more than 3-4 people in it. In past there had been the times when all of GeoHot, @Comex, @iH8sn0w, Chronic Dev Team and iPhone Dev Team have been working simultaneously on a single version of iOS and even competing with each other. That’s not the case anymore as @comex has joined Apple and has officially retired himself from jailbreaking. GeoHot is now working for Facebook and is not enjoying the happy life an independent hacker anymore. @i0n1c, the guy who’s exploit is used in redsn0w and sn0wbreeze to jailbreak iOS 5 tethered is busy writing a book and @ih8sn0w is also not working to jailbreak iOS 5 untethered. iPhone Dev Team is only about unlocking iPhones, they do not work on jailbreaks but may help develop jailbreak tools if they are provided with a complete worked out exploit. The only hope left behind is Chronic Dev Team or in other words @p0sixninja. He has not given any ETAs but we have pretty strong confirmations that he has an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5. We hope he’d release it soon but I’d advise you guys to sit back and relax as it may not be very quick as there’s no competition and there’s only a very limited number of people working on it.
